Correctly measure the rope diameter

Before beginning any operation, ensure that the diameter of the new rope you are installing matches your crane. Keep in mind that most wire ropes are slightly larger than their nominal diameter.

Generally, standard ropes are permitted to be 5% larger than their nominal diameter.

The rope you are replacing may be worn and smaller in diameter than the rope you are installing.

Record the diameter of the new rope for future reference. You will be asked to determine how much the rope's diameter has decreased during use, and you must know the actual diameter of the rope after the break-in period (click here for more information).

When measuring the rope, do not measure the rope layer on the drum. Pull the drum out several feet and then measure the rope after it has straightened. It is recommended to measure four times along the rope's axis and take the average.
